The borough of Sefton is the most northerly of the local authority areas in Merseyside, covering 15,000 hectares (37,200 acres) between the Mersey and Ribble estuaries. Sefton has a population of around 275,899 (ONS 2020).\u00a0<\/p>

The borough is bordered to the west by 22 miles of ecologically important coastline including beaches, woodlands, and wetlands. The principal towns (some of which are recorded in the Doomsday Book), include Bootle, Formby, Crosby and Maghull. \u00a0Southport is the main resort town, featuring a Victorian canopy over the main shopping area, and playing host to the popular Southport Flower show which is an annual event. Aintree Racecourse hosts race meetings, including the world famous Grand National.\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

To the south of the borough lies Bootle, the industrial and commercial heart of Sefton containing the Port of\u00a0Liverpool.\u00a0 One of the world\u2019s leading ports, the Port of Liverpool is the UK\u2019s only west facing port and is the fourth busiest in the United Kingdom.\u00a0 The Port is the most successful Freeport in the UK handling some 34.3 million tons of freight each year.\u00a0 Since the Liverpool 2 Terminal opened for business in 2016, the port has been able to accommodate 95% of the world’s ships and will take 20% of the UK’s container business.\u00a0 Other large employers based in Sefton include Experian, HMRC and Shop Direct.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t
