Dr Ruth Hussey is the 2023-24 High Sheriff of Merseyside. She assumed the appointment in April 2023.
Dr Hussey, originally from North Wales, is a graduate of the University of Liverpool Medical School. She was Director of Public Health for Liverpool from 1991-2002, going on to work at Regional and National level, and becoming Chief Medical Officer for Wales until 2016. In all these roles she had a particular interest in reducing health inequalities.
She is currently Deputy Chair of the Food Standards Agency, Vice Chair of the Health Foundation, a trustee at The Reader and has a number of research and policy advisory roles.
Ruth lives in Liverpool, is married to a GP and has two children.
In 2001 Ruth was appointed to the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire as an Officer and in 2016 made a Companion of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath.
Ruth was commissioned as a Deputy Lieutenant of Merseyside in April 2020.
