Max Steinberg was born in South Liverpool and attended Booker Avenue County Primary School and King David High School, becoming School Captain in 1969 – 1970. He began his career at Liverpool City Council in 1975 before moving to the Housing Corporation where he spent 25 years working in all aspects of housing, eventually becoming Director of Investment and Regeneration North before becoming Chief Executive of Elevate East Lancashire in 2003. In 2008 he became Chief Executive of Regenerate Pennine Lancashire Ltd, one of the largest Economic Development Companies in the UK.
On joining Liverpool Vision as Chief Executive in 2010, Max oversaw Liverpool’s award-winning six-month participation in the World EXPO Shanghai 2010, a six-month global event based around the theme of ‘better city, better life’ which culminated in the Liverpool Gala Day on 16 October 2010. Under his leadership Liverpool Vision was responsible for hosting the Global Entrepreneurship Congress 2012. The week-long congress showcased the city’s economic ambition and is widely regarded as the most successful GEC event to date, welcoming several thousand delegates from 125 countries.
Max was instrumental in securing the first UK International Festival for Business 2014 which was held in Liverpool and had overall responsibility for the organisation and delivery of the Festival. He was Chair of the Festival and Executive Steering Group in 2014, 2016 and 2018. The scale and reach of the IFB has secured domestic sales and exports (of over £700m for UK Plc as well as creating thousands of new jobs for UK Companies) which have far exceeded the targets set.
Max was awarded the OBE in 1997 for services to Housing and Regeneration on Merseyside, and was on the Board of Liverpool John Moores University European Institute of Urban Affairs from 1992 and was its chairman until 2013. He is Chair of the Riverside Housing Group and was a non-executive director of Kensington Regeneration from 2003-2006. He has also been awarded a Senior Fellowship at Liverpool Hope University in 2011 and a Doctorate from Liverpool University in 2019.
Max was appointed Chairman of the Roy Castle Foundation in August 2015 and was also Board Member of the following: The Advisory Board for International Business and Diplomatic Exchange (IBDE) 2015 – 2018 and the Great Exhibition in the North 2017/2018. In December 2018 Max was appointed Chair of the Board of The ACC Liverpool Group and in January 2020 Max was appointed the Chair of Shakespeare in the North Board and also the Chair of the Southport Flower show.
In June 2013 Max was awarded the CBE for services to Business and the Community in the Birthday Honours List. He was commissioned as a Deputy Lieutenant in 2020.
Max is a passionate supporter of Liverpool Football Club and enjoys reading, films and theatre.
